Memoirs of a Mask Maker tells the story of how when the world shut down due to a global pandemic, an artist had all that she needed to take up mask making. For sure, becoming a mask maker required sewing skills, stashes of fabric, artistic decisions, and global connections. But emotionally it demanded something far more difficult: learning how to tend grief and reclaim joy.
I’ve always loved books and newspapers. I am a graduate of Stanford University, holding a bachelor’s degree in History and a master’s degree in East Asian Studies. I am fluent in Japanese. I began my journalism career on the night desk in the Tokyo Bureau of ABC News. After graduating from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, I returned to Tokyo as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. In the US, I reported for the Journal from New York and Boston, and later I taught international business reporting and feature writing at Boston University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
